How to Apply to a University in Malaysia in 2022

So, you’ve decided to study a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme in Malaysia. Congratulations! Not only is Malaysia one of the most peaceful countries in the world, but its universities are also ranked among the best in Asia.

Before packing your bags, throwing a wild party, and reaching insane levels of excitement, let’s first look at the university application process in Malaysia. Some things are obvious, others less so — but they’re all important to be successfully admitted.

1. Pick a subject to study in Malaysia

You can choose from a wide range of English-taught degrees at Malaysian universities. To get you started, we’ve listed some of the most popular disciplines among international students:

  • Master’s degrees in Business
  • Master’s degrees in Engineering
  • Master’s degrees in Accounting
  • Master’s degrees in Medicine
  • Master’s degrees in Social Sciences

2. Find a Malaysian university to apply to

According to the latest rankings by Times Higher Education, these are the best universities in Malaysia:

  • University of Malaya
  • University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR)
  • University Kebangsaan Malaysia
  • University Putra Malaysia

3. Learn where to submit your university application

You should use the official website of your favourite Malaysian university to submit the application. On the website, you’ll also find up-to-date application guidelines and other relevant information for international students (e.g. scholarships and funding).

For any questions you might have, check out the FAQ section on the university website or send an email. A uni representative will be more than willing to reply and help with your application.

4. Meet the university entry requirements

The entry or admission requirements are usually different from one university or study programme to another. Still, international students usually have to submit the following:

  • completed application form
  • proof of paying the application fee (if applicable)
  • high school diploma (to apply for a Bachelor’s)
  • Bachelor’s diploma (to apply for a Master’s)
  • transcript of records
  • passport-sized photo(s)
  • copy of valid passport and/or personal ID
  • motivation letter

Specialised degrees often have additional entry requirements. Remember that while documents and certificates can be submitted online, you still need to translate them into English beforehand.

5. Find out about the language requirements

To study in Malaysia, you will need to prove your English language proficiency. Universities accept one of these English tests:

  • TOEFL iBT
  • IELTS Academic
  • PTE Academic

6. Apply before the application deadlines

While specific dates vary based on the study programme and the university where you want to enrol, keep in mind that there are two main intakes:

  • the September intake, with application deadlines in June
  • the February intake, with application deadlines in November

7. Final steps after receiving your acceptance letter

  • confirm your enrolment after receiving the acceptance letter/university offer
  • apply for a student visa in Malaysia (the processing takes around 3–4 weeks)
  • apply for medical insurance
  • search for scholarships and grants. You can also apply for our Study portals Scholarship: International Distinction Awards.
